A password-protected page is indexed, as only its content is hidden from guests: instead of it, you’ll see a form to input a password that will then unlock the actual page content. It might be a conflict with another plugin, or it might just be my lack of knowledge, but I’ve given up and installed a different plugin ‚content control‘ which seems to be doing what I want.
