Once the site is paired, Backvera takes care of running backups on a\nschedule, storing them off-site, and restoring them when you need them. There\nis nothing to configure on an ongoing basis and nothing to babysit.<\/p>\n\n<p>The goal of the service is simple: backups and restores you can trust.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What the plugin does<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Backs up your files and your database on a schedule you set in the dashboard.<\/li>\n<li>Stores every backup off-site, independent of your web host, so a host outage\nor account suspension does not take your backups with it.<\/li>\n<li>Only transfers what actually changed since the last backup, so recurring\nbackups stay light on your server.<\/li>\n<li>Restores a site in place from the dashboard, in full or one file at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Clones a site onto another site or into a staging environment, so you can\ntest changes, hand a copy to a client, or move the site to a new host.<\/li>\n<li>Uploads a copy of your backups to storage you own, so you keep an\nindependent copy: Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Google\nCloud Storage, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or your own SFTP server.<\/li>\n<li>Works on single-site installs and on multisite networks, where the whole\nnetwork is paired once.<\/li>\n<li>Splits long-running work across several short requests so backups finish on\nshared hosting with strict PHP time limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>An account is required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>This plugin is a client for Backvera and does nothing on its own. On a multisite network, go to Network Admin &gt;\nSettings &gt; Backvera instead; a network is paired once, as a whole.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the connection key shown on that screen.<\/li>\n<li>In your Backvera dashboard, add the site and paste the key when prompted.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>Once the dashboard confirms the connection, backups run on the schedule you\nchoose there. The plugin is the plugin half of a hosted service and does nothing without\nan account. Free and paid plans are available at https:\/\/backvera.com\/.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"where%20are%20my%20backups%20stored%3F\"><h3>Where are my backups stored?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Off-site, in Backvera's storage, not on your web host. That is the point: a\nbackup that lives on the same server as the site is not much use when that\nserver is the thing that failed.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"why%20is%20there%20a%20bv-restore.php%20file%20in%20my%20wordpress%20root%3F\"><h3>Why is there a bv-restore.php file in my WordPress root?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Restoring a site sometimes means replacing the very files WordPress is running\nfrom, including the plugin itself. To survive that, the restore runs from a\nsmall standalone helper that sits outside the plugin directory. The plugin\nplaces it in the WordPress root when you connect the site.<\/p>\n\n<p>The helper only acts on cryptographically signed instructions from the Backvera\nservice, using a secret held alongside it. It ignores everything else. It is\nremoved when you disconnect the site or uninstall the plugin.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"does%20it%20work%20on%20shared%20hosting%20with%20a%20short%20php%20time%20limit%3F\"><h3>Does it work on shared hosting with a short PHP time limit?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Yes. Work is split across several short requests rather than one long one, and\neach run stops well before the host's limit. Large sites simply take more runs.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"does%20it%20work%20on%20multisite%3F\"><h3>Does it work on multisite?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Yes. A network is paired once from Network Admin and backed up as a unit.\nSubsite settings screens point back to the network screen.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id=\"what%20happens%20if%20i%20deactivate%20or%20delete%20the%20plugin%3F\"><h3>What happens if I deactivate or delete the plugin?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Deactivating stops the plugin and cancels its scheduled tasks. Deleting it also\nremoves the plugin's settings, its data in your database, and the restore\nhelper and its key from the WordPress root. Backups already stored with\nBackvera are unaffected and stay subject to the retention on your plan.<\/p><\/dd>\n\n<\/dl>\n\n<!--section=changelog-->\n<h4>1.2.9<\/h4>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fixed a fatal error on hosts that restrict PHP's set_time_limit() or\nini_set(). On PHP 8 this could stop a backup from starting and could\ninterrupt a restore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4>1.2.8<\/h4>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fixed a fatal error on PHP 7.4 and 8.0.
